Changing boundaries of the clearing
Just reading this article, I wondered how societies change over time, how their values and worldviews morph–in this case towards a more liberal, progressive way of dealing with illicit drugs in society. What is the role of scientific research? How long does it take for the masses to start to think differently? What does it take? A change in the values of public school curricula? Widespread favourable media coverage? Do people change or does it take a new generation with new values to overturn tradition? Heidegger said the “horizon of shared understandings”, or clearing, of a culture is shaped by the ideas, values and practices of that culture. What I’m wondering is how exactly we shift the boundaries of the clearing of our own society, what is necessary to break the mould that gave form to what we are capable of thinking?
