Taxes and the art of getting bit in the butt
I like the karmic overtones of the welfare state: In a society in which the government takes money from its citizens to fix things, we all become individually affected by the state of our society as a whole. Because it affects our wallets, to the extent that we are rational beings, we will realize that the logical step would be to care for and engage our societies, be active and involved in our communities and civil society. Simply put, it dissolves the division between something being good for an individual as opposed to others–rather, it makes what is good for others also what is good for the individual. Sweet!
